IISWBM is located amidst a prestigious academic ambience of College Square, in close proximity to the University of Calcutta, Presidency University, Calcutta Medical College and the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health.
The Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata was established through a resolution adopted by the Syndicate of the University of Calcutta on April 25, 1953.
Visionary Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, was the first President of the Board of Governors and Prof D.K Sanyal was the first Director of the Institute.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, laid the foundation stone of IISWBM - India's first institute to introduce a program on management education.

IISWBM has excellent infrastructure facilities in terms of a Central Library with over 52,000 books and over 200 foreign and Indian journals, Hostel Facilities for both men and women and multiple auditoria, seminar rooms and classrooms equipped with modern gadgets and technology.
The Institute takes pride in its faculty that consistently ranks highest amongst premier B-Schools in terms of their Intellectual Capital. The Faculty is dedicated to the development of its students and the Institute and regularly engages itself in research and consultancy work. Several faculty members have won several prestigious awards over the years.
IISWBM offers a range of Research Programs, Degree Programs, Post Graduate Diplomas and Short Programs.
Most of these Programs are offered through prestigious affiliations. For instance, the Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management and Post Graduate Diploma in Media Management are both affiliated to the University of Calcutta.
Further, the Advanced Diploma in Fire Safety Management is offered in affiliation with the West Bengal State Council of Technical Education.
The Institute has been able to establish its academic credential and therefore for the first time in its history has been granted by Calcutta University to offer the M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programs in Public Systems, Management and Social Welfare affiliated to the University of Calcutta. IISWBM is also the only institute outside the University departments to be allowed to do so.
IISWBM was set up with the need to create professionals who could manage professional commercial organizations and business.
Further the name itself suggests that the founding fathers felt the need to blend business management with social welfare through academic excellence.
The focus at IISWBM has always been to create socially conscious professional managers.
The uniqueness of the Institute is that it is not just a management institute but one where emphasis is more on socially relevant programs, social welfare, and proper management of public utilities along with creation of strong domain knowledge in various areas of general management.
The faculty of the Institute takes up a number of research based consultancy work, particularly to develop industry-institute interaction and with Government bodies. The faculty regularly ranks very high for their intellectual capital in the different ranking surveys. The Institute also conducts Management Development Programs regularly.
In the course of its existence for over six decades, IISWBM has produced distinguished alumni who are internationally and nationally known for their contributions, knowledge, commitment, loyalty and ethical values in this fast changing world.

Dr. Partha Chatterjee, Minister for Higher Education & School Education & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of West Bengal, is the present President of the Board of Governors and Sri Dipankar Das Gupta, former Chairman of the Public Service Commission, is the Director.
The Institute has always envisaged taking up programs that have an impact on socio-economic development and public welfare, programs that will help educating and training with knowledge and skills to understand social issues and concerns and thereby will contribute to good governance, spirit of service, culture of public – private partnership bringing an impact on civil society for public good and welfare.
