Program Objective:

Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), which is the first Management Institute set up in India in 1953, has carved out a niche for itself by offering innovative management courses with an overtone on social welfare.

One-year full-time Post Graduate Diploma Course in Sports Management is one such course introduced in the Institute’s Golden Jubilee Year in 2003. Indeed we are the first management institute to offer Sports Management Course in India - a course on the lines of the MBA courses in Sports Management offered by the Universities and Institutes in the UK, the USA and other western countries.

This has become a full-fledged Post Graduate Diploma Course in Sports Management of the University of Calcutta from 2010-2011.

Unlike other management programs of the Institute, the focus of this niche Sports Management Course is on inclusive management education for general graduates, the objective being to offer a career, which would help them to earn a decent livelihood in an unexplored field hitherto.

The Course is designed to give students a professional exposure to the structure, economic impact, organization, marketing, funding of the sports Industry as well as current trends in sports and relationship between sports and the mass media. The students will learn about the laws and regulations that all leisure and recreational organisations have to follow.

More specifically, this One Year Post Graduate Diploma Course has been designed to cater to the demand from various institutions and industries for appropriately qualified people to manage Sports related jobs.

This sports management course would assist the students to gain a thorough understanding of the multi-dimensional importance and the value of sport. The candidates would also acquire business skills relating to public relations, marketing and entrepreneurship, which would assist them in the administration of institutions engaged in various sporting activities.

The program would expose students to the tools and techniques of sports administration including those of event management as well as acquaint them with contemporary trends and issues in sport. The sports science section would cover sports medicine, sports psychology, sports physiology, sports therapy and health promotion.

The course has dedicated modules to cater to the emerging needs of the sports Industry, Modules on Sponsorship, Broadcasting, Quantitative Techniques, Research Methodology in Sports, Media Relations, Infrastructure Management, Sports Economics and Sports Finance are important areas which are carefully covered in the course structure.

Sports law is growing to be an important aspect of the sports industry. The knowledge of the legal aspects of sports business is a tool which each manager must acquire. The course has a subject dedicated to the legal aspects of sport.

Eligibility for the Sports Management Course

The minimum qualification for admission is a Bachelor's Degree (10+2+3 system) in any discipline from any University recognized by the University of Calcutta.

Selection Procedure

  • The number of seats for the Sports Management Course is 30 with reservation for SC and ST categories according to the norms of the University of Calcutta.
  • Selection of the candidates will be made on the basis of a Written Examination which will be followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview.
  • Full marks for the written test will be 100 and the duration is 3 hours.
